JEWEL INSPIRED BY THE SHRUNKEN HEADS (TSANTSA) OF THE SHUAR.
It is a unique and original Necklace of ethnic-tribal style created by hand by Amira Munteanu Bergmann. She took inspiration from the ritual of the shrunken heads (tsantsa) of the Shuar or Jívaro, Indigenous tribe located in the southwest of the Amazon rainforest, in the area of Ecuador and a part of Peru. The Jewel is made of a series of beads intercalated, on the front, by semi-spheres in avocado wood and by some feathers of different kinds of birds. From the center hangs a hand molded in polymer clay. Its front side is painted with a light background embroidery. The back side is with a dark one. Two pendants composed of various elements of terracotta, cold ceramic and long tassels are attached t. O the thumb and forefinger. Instead, to the middle finger hangs a 3D mini-sculpture of a head with two faces (the former with gold and silver skin, the latter with black and gold skin) framed by long rows of white beads acting as hair. From the head hang two more sequences of beads and as many tassels. Since the main parts of the Bijoux are shaped and painted by hand, if, on the one hand, they may present some irregularities, on the other hand they make this jewel a small work of art without equal. "Tsantsas" are shrunken human heads, specially prepared, used for apotropaic, trophy, ritual, or trade purposes. Headhunting has occurred in many regions of the world, but the practice of headshrinking has only been documented in the northwestern region of the Amazon rainforest. Jivaroan peoples, which includes the Shuar, Achuar, Huambisa and Aguaruna tribes from Ecuador and Peru, are known to have shrunken human heads. The practice of preparing shrunken heads originally had religious significance; shrinking the head of an enemy was believed to harness the spirit of that enemy and compel him to serve the shrinker. It was said to prevent the soul from avenging his death. Shuar believed in the existence of three fundamental spirits. Wakani - innate to humans thus surviving their death. Arutam - literally "vision" or "power", protects humans from a violent death.
Muisak - vengeful spirit, which surfaces when a person carrying an Arutam spirit is murdered. To block a Muisak spirit from using its powers, they severed their enemies' heads and shrank them. The process also served as a way of warning their enemies. Despite these precautions, the owner of the trophy did not keep it for long. Many heads were later used in religious ceremonies and feasts that celebrated the victories of the tribe. Accounts vary as to whether the heads were discarded or stored. In the Collection the main symbolic elements are.
The polarities: light-darkness, black-white, man-woman. The Tsantsa Shuar Jewel is part of a collection of ethnic Jewels and Pendants inspired by the traditions and aesthetics of specific tribes, more or less ancient, from various parts of the world.
The Project aims to rediscover and enhance the identity and peculiarities of local cultures through the revival and reinterpretation of ethnic jewelry, talismans, amulets to counter the megatrend of communication, of the uprooting/disembedding, of the loss of the memory of the past, triggered and fed by the ideology of globalization. Within ancient tribal cultures, everything worn, especially during religious ceremonies, was cloaked in an aura of mystery and sacredness. Consequently, the jewels, although also having a decorative and ornamental function, first of all, were thought to have deep symbolic and magical values linked to religion and superstition. To remain faithful to this spirit and since in the realization of ceremonies and magical rituals are fundamental not only the gestures that are performed and the formulas that are pronounced but also the tools that are used, the creation of this mini-sculpture has followed a specific path in tune with the secret rules of the Arcane in order to load it with appropriate energies. Amira Munteanu Bergmann has taken care of the whole production process of the Jewel: from the concept to the creation of the various components, from their assembly to their coloring and decoration.
